Weekly flower update – Week 18
The present status of the flower fields:
The crocuses are gone, the hyacinths are done blooming, most daffodils are done blooming and the regular tulips are in bloom getting to peak blooming.
We had lovely weather the last couple of days. Some rain was forecasted for parade day but with the exception of a few drops it was dry. It was a bit on the cold side.
There are still flower fields in bloom but you have to look for them. Especially when the fields are headed just after peak blooming. There is a red tulip field just across the main entrance of Keukenhof. And a orange fields on the road between Hillegom and Lisse. Those are the closest to Keukenhof. When you have a car or rent a bike make sure you drive along the road between Sassenheim and Noordwijkerhout (road N443). At crossing of the Loosterweg there are some beautiful colorful tulip fields.
After all the questions about the heading of the tulips … we don’t know a exact date when the tulips are headed. It is a combination of status of blooming, weather and the decision of the bulb farmer. When you are visiting make sure you visit as soon as possible, than you have the highest chance to see fields in bloom. When you want to know if it is worth to rent a bike to see the fields, visit the windmill at Keukenhof. When you see colorful fields in the distance there are still fields left. If you can’t see any colorful fields just stay at Keukenhof. (Keukenhof looks gorgeous now)
Present status at Keukenhof
Keukenhof still looks so wonderful. Inside the garden you can see examples of the lasagna planting: flowers that are done blooming are removed to show the flowers underneath that still have to bloom. At some places there are up to three layers of flowers.
Inside the Keukenhof the crocus are gone, the the daffodils are in bloom (some getting to over peak blooming), the hyacinths are blooming (some getting to peak blooming) and de regular tulips are blooming too. And there are still places left that needs to bloom.
The muscari river with daffodils on the side is at it’s peak blooming. A wonderful sight. There are two in the park one between the main entrance and the Juliana pavilion and one between the extra entrance and the Willem Alexander pavilion. Both are a great photo opportunity
I visited the orchid exhibitions last friday and don’t forget to see the green and blue orchids. They look very spectacular.
Forecast this week
The weather forecast is warm, cold, rain and dry weather for this week. We get something from every weather type. The flowers in the fields will get less in the next weeks. When you visit this and next week make sure to visit early in the week. Towards the midst of May there will be no blooming fields left. If you are not sure if it is worth to rent a bike have a look at the Windmill platform before renting and you know your answer. If you see colors in the fields there are still flowers in bloom. I expect the fields being headed around the first week. They won’t be headed all at the same time but the fields are turning into green very quick. See a short video about heading the tulips here.
